Sandustry: How to Move Lava Without Carrying It

Apply Snow to create Scoria, destroy that Scoria to obtain Cinder, transport the Cinder as a solid, then use the Flamethrower to turn it back into Lava. Direct pipes, belts, and the Grabber do not move raw Lava.

Follow the verified four-step method

First apply Snow to Lava so it becomes Scoria. Second, destroy the Scoria with an appropriate tool or weapon to produce Cinder. Third, move the Cinder as a solid; fourth, ignite it directly with the Flamethrower to recreate Lava.

This state conversion is necessary because raw Lava cannot be picked up with the Grabber or moved through ordinary fluid pipes. A belt placed under a Lava pool does not turn the liquid into a transportable item. Work with a small edge of the source until the conversion path is proven.

Prepare the destination first

Build the receiving basin before transporting Cinder into the area. Seal walls and corners, leave sufficient height for the restored liquid to spread, and isolate nearby Water or Snow. Test containment with a small converted batch rather than igniting the full shipment.

Keep access for the Flamethrower and an emergency solid-material exit. A fully enclosed box may hold Lava but make later correction difficult. The receiving area should also separate direct Lava contact from buildings that may consume it over time.

Move Cinder with solid logistics

Cinder can use the same class of logistics as other solids, including Conveyors and Launchers. Filters can keep it separate from Sand, Scoria, or unrelated factory output. A dedicated buffer provides a recoverable reserve while the destination is being commissioned.

Avoid transporting unbroken Scoria and assuming it will behave like the intended Cinder feed. Check the material after breaking each batch, especially when Snow, Water, and loose terrain are present together. Mixed solids can enter the receiving basin and interfere with the final conversion.

Restore Lava with direct fire

Use the Flamethrower on Cinder inside the completed basin. The collected guide specifically distinguishes this direct ignition from nearby passive heat. Restore a little at a time and watch where the liquid settles before adding more.

If a semi-automatic route is desired, automate the Cinder filtering and delivery while keeping final ignition controlled during testing. The conversion chamber must have room for the liquid state, not merely the solid pile. Disable the feed before accessing the hot area for repairs.

Avoid common transport mistakes

Do not attempt to pump raw Lava, place it on a belt, or grab it directly. Do not open a large underground pocket before its lower exits and wall gaps are understood. Do not reignite Cinder beside Water, Snow, or an unfinished basin.

Snow and Water have different reactions with Lava: Snow creates Scoria, while Water becomes Steam. Accidentally combining both can introduce Ice, Steam, and solids into the workspace. Isolate the conversion stages so each material has one intended outcome.

Finally, preserve a Cinder buffer. Map generation changes access to Lava pockets, and a failed basin can be difficult to refill immediately. A stored solid reserve is easier to filter, move, and protect than an exposed liquid source.
